What are fire-safe walls?

A safe working environment is crucial, with fire safety playing a crucial role. When designing an office, it's important to consider smooth flow and sufficient fire exits. Fire-retardant materials are also essential. System Flex tackles this challenge by installing fire-resistant system walls. In this article, we'll distinguish between glass walls and solid walls. Every office has its own unique challenges. Fortunately, System Flex offers an effective solution for every burning question!

Glass system walls

Many modern offices prefer glass wall systems because of the open and spacious feel they create. During a fire, it's important to slow the spread of the fire so employees have enough time to safely evacuate the building. Fire-resistant glass plays a crucial role in this. The tempered glass with a special interlayer forms a temporary barrier as soon as a fire breaks out. The standard for fire-resistant glass is set at 20 minutes of fire resistance.

Solid walls: Metal Stud

Metal stud partition walls are unique in terms of fire safety. These fixed partition walls, constructed of steel profiles and plasterboard, are known for their high fire resistance and sound insulation. The metal frame contributes to the structural strength of the walls, making them more resistant to collapse. The use of fire-resistant plasterboard in combination with metal stud frames extends the fire resistance, making these walls effective barriers against fire spread.

Smoke-resistant walls

Smoke is often more dangerous than the fire itself, due to the harmful substances present in the smoke and inhaled. Unconsciousness can occur, making escape difficult. Therefore, fire safety standards have been adjusted. Fire-resistant glass does not automatically block harmful smoke; this requires smoke-resistant glass. The standard for smoke-resistant glass is set at 30 minutes of resistance to smoke passage.

Fire resistance goes beyond walls. Besides selecting the right materials for system walls, other technologies such as smoke detectors, fire doors, emergency exits, and fire extinguishers are also crucial.

Besides fire-resistant and smoke-resistant glass, there are other aspects to consider when it comes to fire prevention, such as power outages. You can read more about this in this article.
