Liander Westpoort – The Black Dog

This regional office in Amsterdam was designed for the grid operator Alliander . Alliander consciously opted for sustainability and transparency, contributing to a circular, climate-adaptive, and nature-inclusive environment. In addition to grid operator Liander, technical specialist Qirion and metering company Kenten will also be located here. Circular materials such as wood were used as much as possible in the construction of this building, and harmful substances such as glue, polyurethane foam, or sealants were avoided. The parking garage was designed as a demountable structure that can expand and contract. The facades are made of weather-resistant Corten steel. Central wooden staircases in the large atrium of the office building encourage encounters and interaction. A unique "wandering staircase" connects each floor at a different location and offers an exciting route through the office. The buildings and spaces are positioned like a barcode on the site, creating a rhythmic variation. The office building at the end provides the focal point and is visible from the A5 motorway. The equal attention paid to all aspects of the program is striking. The workspaces and storage areas were designed with the same care as the office building, forming a robust whole. The building is reminiscent of the heyday of industrial architecture.

Koivistokade – Marc Koehler Architects

A sustainable, adaptable, and innovative office building in Amsterdam. Located in the sustainable Houthavens neighborhood of Amsterdam, Koivistokade is a striking and versatile office building. Designed to be converted into loft apartments in the future, it can even be expanded with two additional floors. Each floor offers a unique workspace, with varying shapes and sizes and specially coated glass. The building features a raw, spatial quality, high ceilings, wide facades, sun-drenched terraces, and green balconies covered with climbing plants that serve as sunshades.

Sustainability is integrated into the building's design, connecting extra-tall office spaces with green outdoor areas. This creates a stimulating work environment with bright, comfortable interiors, reduced traffic noise thanks to integrated floor-to-ceiling vines, and spacious balconies that offer meeting spaces, shade, and expansive views. The building's column structure minimizes its environmental footprint thanks to the use of recycled concrete and minimal materials. The building's flexibility extends its lifespan, helping to prevent waste and long-term CO2 emissions.

Transformation of the Station Post Office building in The Hague – KCAP

A new role for the icon of functionalism: The national monument next to Hollands Spoor, dating from 1939, boasts a striking facade of light brick and rounded shapes. The building is of great value to The Hague and, thanks to its transformation, has taken on a new function: it is now a contemporary office environment that connects the past and present.

A Community Centre has been designed on the ground floor, featuring a reception hall, café, meeting rooms, and workspaces. Above, the floors have a flexible layout, allowing for a variety of workplace concepts. Efficient floor plans and innovative technical facilities make the building future-proof. The interplay of informal and formal, open and private areas complements the building's new spatial character.

The nominations

The jury was somewhat surprised by the low number of submissions, given the numerous developments in the office building sector. Furthermore, the jury noted that more new office buildings were submitted than sustainability projects for existing buildings, while the jury had anticipated a significant challenge in this area.

Award Ceremony

The Office Building of the Year award is part of the Architectenweb Awards 2023.

In addition to the Office Building of the Year award, prizes will be presented on November 8th in the following categories: Residential Building of the Year, Healthcare Building of the Year, School Building of the Year, Interior of the Year, and Public Building of the Year. The winner of the 2023 Architect of the Year award will be announced simultaneously. The location for the ceremony will be announced later.
