March is the month of sustainability: Building a future

March Sustainability Month: From boardroom slogan to the shop floor

Sustainability buzzwords are everywhere: circular, emission-free, urban mining, ESG standards, and reuse. The big question is: what do these words mean when we leave the boardroom and enter the workplace? It sounds great on paper, of course, but what do these sustainability buzzwords actually mean in practice? March has been officially declared Sustainability Month. For System Flex, this isn't just a marketing pitch, but a reminder of why we're all doing it. Sustainability isn't a project with a beginning and an end. It's a new way of life that considers your materials, spaces, and the future of the work environment and our planet.

Why March is Sustainability Month

Simple. Many initiatives are taking place this month. It's a time to look ahead and take stock. In the business world, this is the time for organizations to make their sustainability goals concrete. Some national initiatives in 2026 include:

  • March 19-27: Circular Economy Week – During this week, events will be organized to accelerate circular initiatives.
  • March 21: National Cleanup Day – A day when volunteers throughout the Netherlands clean up litter to keep the environment livable.
  • March 28: Earth Hour – Between 8:30 and 9:30 PM, millions of people, businesses, and municipalities will turn off their lights to send a message about climate action.
  • March 30: Green Energy Day – The day on which the Netherlands' sustainable energy output reaches its maximum for the year.

According to the Dutch Green Building Council , the construction sector is responsible for a significant portion of CO₂ emissions. These initiatives, in particular, make it painfully clear that we need to critically examine how we design our buildings. Sustainability in March is about raising awareness: "Will what we build today still be there in ten years?"

The power of reusability and circular system walls

A major misconception about the term sustainability is that everything has to be green. The most sustainable solutions are often existing products that can be reused. Our glass system walls are a perfect example of this.

When an organization changes, the way people work can also change. Think of workstations that need to be rotated or teams that are reduced or expanded. Where traditional plaster walls are demolished and discarded, demountable system walls can be reused elsewhere. This aligns seamlessly with the Residential Revolution in the office: a flexible design that feels like home, but is built for the future.

Light, glass and energy saving

Energy consumption is a key pillar of sustainability, especially in light of Green Energy Day. Research by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl) shows that energy efficiency in offices is one of the fastest ways to achieve climate goals. Glass is a strategic ally in this regard. By cleverly using transparent walls, you can control light and minimize the use of artificial lighting.

Use of materials and industrial reliability

At System Flex, we critically examine the materials we use. Aluminum profiles, for example, are highly recyclable without loss of quality. This also means we're honest about our materials. There's no point in calling a wall sustainable if it ends up in the landfill after three years due to poor quality. We're also seeing a movement toward more natural materials, something we also see reflected in international design trends like Dezeen . The trick is to combine that natural look with industrial solidity.

The human factor: Sustainability as a lifestyle

Ultimately, sustainability is about one thing: people. There are only two options to keep this world livable. Option 1: humans take care of the planet. Option 2: humans leave, and then it will resolve itself. These initiatives won't end in March; they must become a way of life, not just for companies, but also for the people behind them.

Conclusion: Choose the long term

Sustainability is a key theme in March, with initiatives like Circular Economy Week and Earth Hour, but for System Flex, it's standard in every project we deliver. Whether it's reusing walls, maximizing daylight, or choosing recyclable profiles: we build for the future.
