Glazier shortage: Innovative solutions for a sustainable future
The Netherlands has an ambitious climate goal: to be energy neutral by 2050. To achieve this, sustainability efforts are underway on a large scale, with the transition to high-quality insulating glass playing a crucial role. However, the enormous demand for energy-saving measures is encountering a major problem: a severe shortage of skilled workers. Therefore, the glass sector is doing everything it can to train new talent and address the shortage of glaziers.
New opportunities for permit holders
An inspiring initiative comes from the Glass Division of Bouwend Nederland (Dutch Construction Association) and the Dutch Council for Refugees (VluchtelingenWerk Nederland) . They are joining forces to train licensed glaziers to become glaziers. The Glass Knowledge Center has developed a special training program tailored to the students' knowledge and language skills. This project serves as a pilot program, preparing the first assistant glaziers for a rewarding career with recognized glass companies.
Scaling up vocational training
Besides these specific programs, mainstream education is also evolving. Schools like Horizon College in Heerhugowaard, Scalda in Goes, and the ROC in Nieuwegein now offer full-fledged vocational (MBO) programs for glaziers. Accredited training companies play a key role in this by providing students with the practical experience they need to achieve future climate goals.
