In August 2020, a new restriction on diisocyanates was published in the Official Journal of the European Union. Diisocyanates are found in PU adhesives, sealants, and polyurethane foam and can cause respiratory and skin problems. Therefore, extra care must be taken when working with this substance. As of August 24, 2023, you must be able to demonstrate a certificate. This can be obtained by completing a specialized training course.
What are Diisocyanates?
Diisocyanates are important chemicals used in a wide range of applications. They are often used in the production of polyurethane, which is used in insulation, furniture, and car seats, among other things. They are also found in paints, inks, varnishes, coatings, and adhesives—products frequently used by builders and finishers.
Diisocyanates can be dangerous if not used correctly. Therefore, it's essential to be fully aware of the safety protocols and procedures used in the production and use of these substances.
What should I do?
Are you a manufacturer or professional user of a product containing diisocyanates? Then you will need to obtain a certificate to use the product. You can take the training course via this link -> https://isopa-aisbl.idloom.events/?lang=nl
Check with the product supplier to see if they have a registration code so you can take the free training course. Then, follow these steps.
- Select Application Sectors: Adhesives and Sealants
- Then select at the bottom of the page under Available training courses: 048 Professional application of adhesives and sealants / Small packaging at ambient temperature
- After that you can register
Are you a professional user and don't want to take the training course? Then you can choose an alternative by selecting a product with a diisocyanate content lower than 0.1%. Discuss the options with your supplier.
Content of the training
The training lasts approximately 30 minutes and in this training you will learn about the following topics:
Module 1 - 048 Professional Application of Adhesives and Sealants / Small Packages at Ambient Temperature
- Introduction
- What are diisocyanates
- How hypersensitivity can develop
- Personal health
- Emergency measures
- Behavioral security
- National codes
This program concludes with a quiz. After completing all modules and passing the quiz, you will receive a certificate that you can download and print as a PDF.
Note: Make sure you fully view all modules to access the quiz.
